Spotters: Voices from Above
Some spotters pass along only the bare minimum instruction that will help avoid a wreck, while others chatter as if they're riding shotgun on a weekend road trip.
Mike Dillon, Clint Bowyer's spotter since Bowyer moved up to the Sprint Cup Series level in 2006, talks almost constantly through the entire race. His conversation is punctuated by "That's what I'm talking about!" and "Show 'em how to do it!" as well as admonitions to "be smart" and "stay focused." Because decisions must be made so quickly, Bowyer said, what Dillon says usually goes, "If a crash happens in front of you, and he tells you to go low, you need to put that trust in him and go low."
